Obviously, garages are meant for vehicles. But, as you probably already know all too well, most homeowners use their garages for a lot more than just parking their cars. Unfortunately, garages seem to get cluttered, and there could even come a time when there is just no more room to park your vehicle. Before this happens, there are things you can do to create a garage that is organized well enough that it can be used for multiple purposes. Here are some tips for getting your garage organized, and doing it on a budget.

Create a Plan

Before you can start organizing your garage, you need to sit down and create a plan. This is going to allow you to organize things in a way that you will be able to use anything you need when you need it, without having to dig through a bunch of other things to get to it.

Grab a pad of paper and a pencil, and draw a simple layout of your garage. Then, you can start adding things to your drawing that will create the storage space you need. It will likely take a few drawings, which will include spaces for shelves, drawers, etc. Your plan should include a place for everything. That way, when you have completed the organizing project, you will have specific spots for all of your tools, seasonal supplies, etc.

Gather Up Building Supplies

If your plans include building shelves or cabinets, you are going to need building supplies. You can save a lot of money by getting supplies that have been taken from older homes during teardowns and renovations. For instance, an old set of kitchen cabinets and a countertop could make a great storage/work area for your garage. In addition to old cabinets, you can make shelves from used materials, as well as areas where you can hang tools and other items.

Making Cheap Shelves

You can use old boards and cheap metal brackets to create shelving in garages. Remember, it isn’t like you need to have anything fancy, so you don’t even have to worry about painting or staining, unless you want to. You can either buy boards from your local lumber supplier, or get them from renovation and building sites.

Pegboard

A great and inexpensive way to keep your tools organized, and always in sight so you can find the tools you need right away, is to have them hanging from a pegboard. You can get cheap pegboard from your local hardware store. Or, you can drill holes into a piece of plywood. Then, all you have to do is add nails, screws, or hooks to hang items from, and hang the board on a wall so it is out of the way.
